Red Light Camera Update |
Red Light Camera Safety Program Purpose To help combat the serious problem of red-light running, the City of Dallas implemented its automated red-light enforcement program in December 2006. The program uses photo enforcement technology to enforce the law fairly and consistently with the goal of reducing violations, preventing crashes and injuries, and saving lives. Photo Enforcement Cameras are clearly not a replacement for police officers. An automated enforcement program is one component of a broad-based traffic safety program including engineering, education and traditional law enforcement. Accidents Are Down Staff has been analyzing police accident reports at the 60 camera sites installed in January, 2007 through July, 2007. Research engineers suggest that two years of before and after accident data is required to make any solid conclusions about the results of red light cameras. Multi-year analysis accounts for any unusual spikes or lulls in accidents that would be misleading if reviewed in shorter intervals. The first 17 cameras installed in January of 2007 now have two years of post implementation data and our analysis shows the following before and after results:
The remaining 43 cameras have 18 months post implementation data and although we are short of a full 2-year analysis, we can report the following preliminary results:
Mayor Leppert proclaims August 3-9, 2008, National Stop on Red Week
At a news conference August 6, 2008 to celebrate National Stop on Red Week, Dallas officials unveiled a new HEROES poster featuring Dallas firefighters, police and Dr. John Carlo, the Health Authority for Dallas and the City of Dallas. The HEROES poster is part of the SafeLight , Dallas Stops on Red! Program education and awareness initiative. The HEROES campaign highlights persons in these professions who exhibit unyielding bravery by saving lives each day in the line of duty. The campaign urges drivers to be HEROES as well by stopping on red and saving lives.
